Lancaster

Lancaster is the fifth biggest city in Los Angeles County, and the ninth-fastest growing city in the entire United States. Lancaster is the 30th biggest city in California, and 148th biggest city in the United States. The city is the principal city within the Antelope Valley. Lancaster is located in Southern California's Antelope Valley, about 71 miles north of the city of Los Angeles. It is separated from Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley by the Tehachapi Mountain Range to the north and from the Los Angeles Basin by the San Gabriel Mountain Range to the south. The population of Lancaster has grown from just 37,000 residents at the time of its official incorporation in 1977, to 157,212 people at the time of the 2010 U.S. census, which makes it the biggest city on the California part of the Mojave Desert. Also according to the 2010 Bureau, the city has an area of 94.8 square miles, of which 94.4 square miles is land and the remaining 0.4 square miles is water. Lancaster has an average elevation of 2,350 feet above sea level on a high, flat valley that is surrounded by pristine mountain ranges. Because the elevation is in the range of 2000 to 3,000 feet above sea level, the area, like the other parts of the Mojave Desert region, is sometimes referred to as High Desert. The city has family incomes above the national average, and housing prices that fall below the state average. The median home price in Lancaster is roughly $300 thousand. 71% of the city’s residents own their own homes. Lancaster also has seen a large growth in business over the last decade, with the establishment of large distribution centers for national companies such as Sygma, Rite Aid, and Michaels as well as smaller local businesses and many national chain restaurants. The city government has made stimulating local business a top priority, offering businesses low-priced land and a streamlined development process without the red tape. The Lancaster Redevelopment Agency is an active and successful redevelopment and economic development program in California. It has made a commitment to attracting and retaining thriving businesses through policies initiated by elected officials and carried out by its staff assisting the business community. The Redevelopment Agency has designated five areas as business and industrial parks in the city of Lancaster: Lancaster Business Park, Fox Field Industrial Corridor, the North Valley Industrial Center, North Lancaster Industrial Center, and Enterprise Business Park. The Redevelopment Agency has also been involved in attracting retail and dining to the Front Row Center, the Lancaster Town Center, and other retail centers in the city.
